Fad Diets – Do You Really Need a Temporary Weight Loss?

Fad diets, basically, are diets that attempt to help you lose weight by making drastic changes to your nutrition, often telling you to only eat one thing or to avoid certain kinds of food completely. If you struggle with the weight, you have probably tried at least one of the popular fad diets. The truth is that some of these diets do result in a weight loss, but the loss is only temporary. As a rule, the weight returns as soon as you deflect from the diet. And this is always the case, unless you choose to eat lettuce or whatever else has been proclaimed by your diet, for the rest of your life. Let's see why it is so.

Effects of A Fad Diet

Fad diets tend to be too restrictive to follow for a long period of time. So sooner or later people drop up their fad diets and come back to their normal nutrition. Once it happens, they regain the weight, and often gain even more than where they started. So, don't let another fad diet lead you to the constant yo-yo effect! Make small but practical changes to your eating habits, and you'll be able to achieve long-term weight loss.

When I was at school, I had a classmate who was a pretty girl for some reason obsessed by the idea to lose weight. Once as we met after summer holidays, I simply didn't recognize her. She was really thin, thinner than the thinnest girls in the class, and she actually looked great. I must confess, my first thought was “Wow! I want too". She said she ate only some fruit and berries and drank tea or water all that time. Well, the studies began, and no sooner than a couple of weeks had passed, she started to gain weight swiftly. She experienced an operation, and she simply couldn't keep to that stupid diet any more. When we graduated, she was twice fatter than at that day I saw her after holidays. I know that when you just read how dangerous fad diets are, you still don't realize it to that extent as when you witness the case firsthand. And now I am really happy that I didn't give way to that stupid impulse I had when looking at my friend.

Fad Diets and Teenagers

When it comes to fad diets, the health effects can be permanent, especially with teenagers. Absolutely not al teens who go on diets really need to lose weight. It may be pressure from friends, TV, and sometimes even parents, that makes them put their health at risk. Health experts warn that fad diets can keep teenagers from getting the nutrients and calories they need to grow properly.

If teens stay on a strict diet for a long period of time, they may deprive their bodies of well-balanced diet that is vital during the teen years when the body experiences dramatic change and growth. Besides, some pills promoted for weight loss can lead to side effects like insomnia, nervousness, or vomiting, and even can be addictive. Parents of teens who suffer from overweight should consult with a good physician before allowing their child to go on any diet.
